Paddy Festival at Thirukkuvalai, Nagappattinam
CREATE SAVE OUR RICE, in collaboration with Sevalaya NGO and Erotti Farmers Producer Company, organized the 17th National Paddy Festival on November 4, 2023, in Thirukkuvalai, the birth village of the late former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanithi. The event was presided over by Mr. Palaniyappan, the Panchayat President of Thirukkuvalai.
During the event, Mr. Suresh Kanna, Project Director of CREATE Trust, delivered a special address. He provided insights into CREATE Trust and the Save Our Rice Campaign, reflecting on the organization’s two-decade-long efforts in promoting traditional paddy varieties in Tamil Nadu. Mr. Suresh Kanna emphasized CREATE’s future initiatives, focusing on expanding traditional paddy cultivation, conducting consumer awareness programs, implementing producer-controlled marketing strategies, and conducting nutritional analyses of traditional paddy varieties in collaboration with academic and research institutions.
Approximately 50 farmers participated in the event, during which four traditional paddy varieties—Mappillai Samba, Thanga Samba, Seeraga Samba, and Atthur Kitchali Samba—were distributed to the attending farmers. The event took place at the community hall in Thirukkuvalai and was organized by Mr. Murugaperumal, the Founder of Sevalaya.
